Specialty Drywall Systems
Type X Drywall
Type X is 5/8 inch gypsum board with glass fibre reinforcement in its core that helps it stay intact longer when exposed to fire. It is the board used in most one hour rated assemblies, though the rating comes from the assembly rather than from the board.

About Type X Drywall
Type X board contains glass fibres distributed through its gypsum core. Under fire exposure, gypsum releases the water chemically bound within it, which absorbs heat, and the glass fibres hold the weakened core together while that happens. That combination is what buys the rated time.
Type C goes further, with additional additives and more glass fibre, and it appears in assemblies requiring longer ratings or particular performance. Both are components of tested assemblies rather than ratings in their own right.

Why this matters
- Correct board for most one hour rated assemblies
- Installed at the fastener spacing the listing specifies
- Also useful for ceilings generally, given its sag resistance
- Type C specified where the assembly requires it

How we work
Our Process
How a type x drywall project runs from first contact through final walkthrough.
Step 1: Define the Performance Target
Moisture, fire, sound, and impact are four different problems. We establish which one you are actually solving before specifying anything.
Step 2: Specify the Assembly
Performance comes from the complete assembly, not the board alone. We specify board, framing, insulation, fasteners, and sealing together.
Step 3: Written Scope
The estimate names the specific board type and assembly details, so what you are buying is unambiguous.
Step 4: Build to the Detail
Specialty assemblies only perform when built exactly as listed. We follow the detail rather than approximating it.
Step 5: Verify and Document
Assembly checked before close in, documented where an inspection or rating depends on it, then finished and cleaned.
Scope
What's Included
Written into every estimate so there is no ambiguity about what you are paying for.
- Assembly listing confirmation
- Type X or Type C board installation
- Correct layering and joint staggering
- Fastener type and spacing per listing
- Joint treatment and firestopping coordination
