Drywall Finishing
Joint Taping and Mudding
Joint taping and mudding embeds reinforcing tape in compound at every drywall seam, then builds additional compound coats over it. The tape provides tensile strength across the joint, which is what stops the seam cracking as the building moves.

About Joint Taping and Mudding
Tape is the structural element of a drywall joint. Compound has almost no tensile strength on its own, so a joint finished with compound alone will crack the first time the building moves seasonally. The tape carries that tension. This is why a properly taped joint holds for decades and an untaped one fails within a year.
Bedding matters as much as the tape itself. The tape has to be pressed into a wet bed of compound with the excess worked out from underneath, so it bonds across its full width. Tape laid over a dry or starved bed will blister and lift later, and that shows as a long bubble along the seam.

Why this matters
- Paper tape at flat joints and inside corners for maximum strength
- Tape properly bedded so it bonds across its full width
- Compound built in thin coats with real dry time
- Joints feathered wide enough to disappear under paint

How we work
Our Process
How a joint taping and mudding project runs from first contact through final walkthrough.
Step 1: Assess the Surface
We review the substrate, the lighting the wall actually lives in, and the paint sheen planned, because all three drive the finish level required.
Step 2: Written Scope
The estimate states the finish level explicitly, so there is no ambiguity between us, you, and your painter.
Step 3: Protect and Contain
Floors and adjacent areas protected, containment set before any sanding begins.
Step 4: Build the Coats
Compound applied in thin passes with full dry time between coats. Rushing this stage is what causes shrinkage and cracking.
Step 5: Inspect Under Raking Light
The surface is inspected with a light held near parallel to it, which reveals what normal room light hides. Anything found is corrected before we finish.
Scope
What's Included
Written into every estimate so there is no ambiguity about what you are paying for.
- Tape embedded at all flat joints and inside corners
- Fastener heads coated
- Corner bead coated
- Two build coats over the bedded tape
- Progressive feathering, each coat wider than the last
