Moisture-Resistant Drywall Guide

2 min read

Moisture resistant drywall handles elevated humidity but not direct water contact. It suits bathroom and laundry walls. Areas exposed to running water, particularly inside a shower, require cement board or another purpose made tile backer with a waterproofing membrane.

What is moisture resistant drywall?

Moisture resistant drywall, still widely called green board after its traditional facing colour, uses a treated core and moisture resistant facing to handle elevated humidity better than standard gypsum board.

It is designed for humid air, not for liquid water. That distinction is responsible for a great deal of expensive damage in Orange County bathrooms.

Where should moisture resistant board be used?

On bathroom walls and ceilings outside the shower area, in laundry rooms, around kitchen sinks and dishwashers, and in any space with persistently elevated humidity and limited ventilation.

Coastal properties in Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, Dana Point, and Seal Beach carry higher ambient humidity year round, so specifying it more broadly than you would inland is often worthwhile.

  • Bathroom walls and ceilings outside the shower
  • Laundry rooms and utility spaces
  • Kitchen areas around sinks and dishwashers
  • Basements and poorly ventilated interior rooms
  • Coastal properties generally

Where does moisture resistant board fail?

Inside a shower or tub surround. Moisture resistant gypsum board used as tile backer where water runs down it will eventually fail, because the gypsum core is still gypsum and sustained water contact destroys it.

This is one of the most common causes of failed tile installations and hidden mold in Orange County homes. Wet zones need cement board or another purpose made tile backer, plus a waterproofing membrane over it.

Is mold resistant board different?

Yes, and in persistently humid spaces it is usually the better choice. Traditional green board resists moisture in its core and facing but still has a paper face, and paper is the food source mold actually grows on.

Purpose made mold resistant board replaces the paper facing with fiberglass entirely, removing the food source. It costs modestly more and is worth it in bathrooms with poor ventilation and in coastal properties.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use moisture resistant board behind shower tile?
No. It is designed for humid air rather than direct water contact, and it will fail behind tile in a shower. Use cement board or another purpose made tile backer with a waterproofing membrane over it. This is not a place to economise.
Should my whole bathroom be moisture resistant board?
Walls and ceiling, yes, that is sensible. Inside the shower or tub surround, no, that needs cement board. Using one material for the whole room means either overspending on the dry areas or, far worse, underspecifying the wet ones.
