Drywall Framing
Blocking and Backing Installation
Blocking and backing is extra framing installed between studs to provide solid fastening points behind finished drywall. It supports wall mounted televisions, cabinets, grab bars, handrails, and equipment, and it has to be installed before board goes up.

About Blocking and Backing
Blocking is the cheapest insurance in construction and the most commonly skipped step. It costs a few dollars and a few minutes per location during framing. Adding it after the wall is finished means cutting the wall open, installing it, patching, and texture matching, which is easily fifty times the cost.
The conversation to have before a wall closes is simple: what is going on this wall, ever? Televisions, floating shelves, upper cabinets, handrails, grab bars, headboards, and equipment brackets all need it. In accessible and aging in place work, grab bar blocking should go in around every toilet and in every shower whether or not a bar is being installed today.

Why this matters
- Solid fastening for heavy items with no special anchors needed
- Costs almost nothing now versus opening a finished wall later
- Essential in metal framed walls where studs hold very little
- Future proofs accessible bathrooms for grab bars
