Specialty Drywall Systems in Orange County

Specialty drywall systems use engineered board and assembly details to solve specific performance problems: moisture exposure, fire resistance, sound transmission, and physical impact. Performance always comes from the complete assembly rather than from the board alone.

About Specialty Drywall Systems

Specialty drywall is where most contractors either overcharge for a board swap or undercharge and deliver something that does not perform. Both come from the same misunderstanding: treating the board as the product.

The board is one component. A fire rated wall gets its rating from a tested assembly comprising specific board type and thickness, specific stud gauge and spacing, specific fastener type and spacing, specific joint treatment, and specific firestopping at every penetration. Change any one of those and the rating no longer applies, regardless of what the board is stamped with.

The same is true of acoustics. Sound batts in a cavity help. Sound batts with an unsealed gap at the top plate help far less. Sound batts, sealed penetrations, decoupled board, and mass work together to produce genuine privacy, and no single one of them does it alone.

We specify assemblies rather than boards, we build to the listed detail rather than to habit, and we tell you honestly what a given assembly will and will not achieve. That last part matters most with soundproofing, where expectations and physics are frequently very far apart.

Specialty Drywall Systems services

12 specific services within this category. Each has its own page covering process, materials, and the questions we get asked about it.

Why this matters

  • Assemblies specified and built as complete systems
  • Rated assemblies built to their listed details, not approximated
  • Honest performance expectations set before you commit
  • Every penetration sealed or firestopped as the assembly requires
  • Documentation where inspections depend on it

How we work

Our Process

Every project runs through the same five stages, so you always know what happens next.

  1. Step 1: Define the Performance Target

Moisture, fire, sound, and impact are four different problems. We establish which one you are actually solving before specifying anything.

  2. Step 2: Specify the Assembly

Performance comes from the complete assembly, not the board alone. We specify board, framing, insulation, fasteners, and sealing together.

  3. Step 3: Written Scope

The estimate names the specific board type and assembly details, so what you are buying is unambiguous.

  4. Step 4: Build to the Detail

Specialty assemblies only perform when built exactly as listed. We follow the detail rather than approximating it.

  5. Step 5: Verify and Document

Assembly checked before close in, documented where an inspection or rating depends on it, then finished and cleaned.

Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Does using fire rated board make a wall fire rated?
No, and this is the most consequential misunderstanding in the trade. A rating belongs to a tested assembly, not to a board. The listing specifies board type and thickness, stud gauge and spacing, fastener type and spacing, joint treatment, insulation, and firestopping at penetrations. Deviating from any of those means the assembly is no longer the assembly that was tested, and the rating does not apply.
What is the most effective way to soundproof a wall?
Decoupling, then mass, then absorption, then sealing. Decoupling the board from the studs with resilient channel or isolation clips makes the largest single difference, because it interrupts the structural path sound travels. Adding a second layer of board adds mass. Insulation absorbs energy in the cavity. Sealing every penetration and perimeter stops air paths. Doing all four gets you genuine privacy. Doing only one gets you a modest improvement and usually disappointment.
Do I need moisture resistant board in my whole bathroom?
Not the whole room. Moisture resistant board is appropriate for the general bathroom environment. Areas that get directly wet, particularly inside a shower or tub surround where tile is going, need cement board or a comparable tile backer, because moisture resistant gypsum board is not designed for direct water exposure.
Is specialty board much more expensive?
The board itself is moderately more expensive. The larger cost difference is usually the assembly: double layering, resilient channel, additional sealing, and the extra labour those require. That is also where the performance comes from, so it is not a place to economise if you actually need the performance.
