Nail Pop Repair

A nail pop is a fastener that has backed out of the framing, pushing a visible bump or crack through the finished surface. The repair requires resetting or replacing the fastener and adding a second fastener nearby, then rebuilding the surface. Refilling the bump alone does not work.

About Nail Pop Repair

Nail pops are almost always caused by lumber drying. Framing installed at higher moisture content shrinks as it dries, and as the stud narrows the fastener stays put relative to the board while the framing pulls away. The result is a small dome or a crescent crack in the finish.

The mistake is filling the dome. The fastener is still loose, so it will move again. The repair is to drive the original fastener back below the surface or remove it entirely, add a screw an inch or two away into solid framing, and then rebuild the surface over both.

Why this matters

  • Fastener reset or replaced rather than covered over
  • Second fastener added to secure the board properly
  • Surface rebuilt in coats and feathered
  • Texture matched so the repair is invisible

Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do nail pops keep coming back?
Because the fastener was never secured. Filling the bump covers the symptom while leaving the loose fastener free to move again with the next seasonal cycle. Resetting or replacing it and adding a second screw is what actually stops it.
Are nail pops a sign of a structural problem?
Very rarely. They are usually normal lumber shrinkage in the first year or two after construction. Widespread pops appearing suddenly in an older building are worth a closer look, but in most homes they are a finish issue rather than a structural one.
