Level 5 Critical Light Finish

A Level 5 critical light finish applies a full surface skim coat and then verifies the result under light held nearly parallel to the surface. It is specified for walls with large glazing, wall washing fixtures, smooth finishes, or paint sheens that would reveal any variation.

About Level 5 Critical Light Finish

Critical lighting is light that grazes a surface rather than striking it. Floor to ceiling glazing, skylights, wall washing fixtures, and picture lights all produce it. Because the light travels nearly parallel to the wall, any variation as small as a fraction of a millimetre casts a visible shadow.

Level 5 is the specified answer, and the part that distinguishes a genuine critical light finish is the verification. A skim coat applied and sanded is Level 5. A skim coat applied, sanded, then inspected under a raking light from every angle the wall will actually be viewed and lit from, with everything found corrected, is a critical light finish. The second one takes longer and is the only one worth paying for in these conditions.

Why this matters

  • Full surface skim coat for uniform texture and porosity
  • Verified under raking light from every relevant angle
  • Corrections made before handoff rather than discovered after paint
  • Specified per wall rather than applied to a whole house by default

How we work

Our Process

How a level 5 critical light finish project runs from first contact through final walkthrough.

  1. Step 1: Define the Performance Target

Moisture, fire, sound, and impact are four different problems. We establish which one you are actually solving before specifying anything.

  2. Step 2: Specify the Assembly

Performance comes from the complete assembly, not the board alone. We specify board, framing, insulation, fasteners, and sealing together.

  3. Step 3: Written Scope

The estimate names the specific board type and assembly details, so what you are buying is unambiguous.

  4. Step 4: Build to the Detail

Specialty assemblies only perform when built exactly as listed. We follow the detail rather than approximating it.

  5. Step 5: Verify and Document

Assembly checked before close in, documented where an inspection or rating depends on it, then finished and cleaned.

Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from a standard Level 5?
The skim coat is the same. The difference is verification. A critical light finish is inspected under a light held near parallel to the surface, from every direction the wall will be lit and viewed from, and anything the light reveals is corrected before handoff. Without that step you find out how good the finish is when the painter primes it.
Which walls actually need this?
Walls beside floor to ceiling glazing, walls under skylights, walls with wall washing or grazing fixtures, gallery and display walls, and any smooth wall receiving satin or higher sheen paint. It is worth specifying per wall rather than per house, because a bedroom with a small window genuinely does not need it.
