Drywall Finishing

Level 4 Drywall Finish

A Level 4 finish applies tape and three coats of compound over joints, fasteners, and beads, sanded smooth. It is the standard specification for walls receiving texture or flat to eggshell paint, and it is what most residential drywall in Orange County is finished to.

About Level 4 Finish

Level 4 is the workhorse specification. Tape gets embedded at every joint, then two more coats go over the joints, the fastener heads, and the corner beads, each one wider than the last. The result is a surface where joints and fasteners are invisible under normal lighting.

What Level 4 does not do is unify the whole surface. Between the finished joints, the paper face of the board is still exposed, and paper absorbs paint differently than joint compound does. Under flat paint in normal light, nobody sees the difference. Under a satin sheen, or under light raking across the wall from a window, the joints can read as slightly different bands. That is not a defect in the Level 4 work. It is Level 4 doing exactly what Level 4 does.

How we work

Our Process

How a level 4 finish project runs from first contact through final walkthrough.

  1. Step 1: Assess the Surface

We review the substrate, the lighting the wall actually lives in, and the paint sheen planned, because all three drive the finish level required.

  2. Step 2: Written Scope

The estimate states the finish level explicitly, so there is no ambiguity between us, you, and your painter.

  3. Step 3: Protect and Contain

Floors and adjacent areas protected, containment set before any sanding begins.

  4. Step 4: Build the Coats

Compound applied in thin passes with full dry time between coats. Rushing this stage is what causes shrinkage and cracking.

  5. Step 5: Inspect Under Raking Light

The surface is inspected with a light held near parallel to it, which reveals what normal room light hides. Anything found is corrected before we finish.

Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Level 4 good enough for my walls?
For textured walls with flat or eggshell paint, yes, and it is the correct specification. It is not sufficient for smooth walls, for any sheen above eggshell, or for walls that receive strong raking light, because in those conditions the difference in absorption between compound and paper face becomes visible.
Can I paint directly over a Level 4 finish?
After priming, yes. Priming is important on a Level 4 surface specifically because compound and paper absorb differently, and a good primer evens that out before the finish coat.
