Drywall Material Comparison Guide

1 min read

Drywall board types differ by core composition and facing. Standard board suits dry interiors, moisture resistant board suits humid rooms, Type X provides fire resistance, abuse and impact resistant board suit high traffic, and cement board is the correct substrate for wet areas.

How do drywall board types compare?

Every specialty board exists to solve one specific problem. Choosing correctly means identifying which problem you actually have rather than buying the most expensive option.

How do you choose the right board?

Work zone by zone rather than room by room. A bathroom is not one condition, it is several: the ceiling gets humidity, the wall beside the shower gets splash, and the inside of the shower gets running water. Those are three different materials.

The most expensive mistakes come from using one board across a whole room. Either you overspend on the dry areas or, far more costly, you underspecify the wet ones.

What about joint compound types?

Compound matters as much as board and gets far less attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is lightweight drywall as good as standard?
For most applications yes, and it is easier to handle which reduces the risk of damage during installation. Where standard board still has an edge is in mass, which matters for acoustic assemblies. If sound is a priority, heavier board is the better choice.
Should I use 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch board?
Half inch is standard for walls. Five eighths is standard for ceilings, because it resists sag, and it is required in most fire rated assemblies. Some builders use 5/8 throughout for its better sound performance and greater rigidity, which is a legitimate upgrade.
