Why it travels so far
Gypsum dust particles are small enough to stay suspended in air for hours rather than settling quickly like sawdust. That means it moves with every air current in the building rather than staying where it was created.
It is also the number one complaint about drywall work and the leading cause of low star reviews in this trade.

The five minute step most contractors skip
Sealing the HVAC supply vents and returns in the work area. An open return pulls fine gypsum dust straight into the ductwork, where it is then redistributed through the entire building every time the system runs.
It takes about five minutes and it is one of the highest value tasks on any drywall job.
What dustless sanding actually does
The sanding head connects to a HEPA filtered vacuum that draws dust away at the point of creation, before it becomes airborne. HEPA filtration specifically matters because a standard shop vacuum captures the coarse fraction and blows the finest particles straight back into the room.
It is not literally dust free, and anyone claiming that is overselling. The honest description is that you clean one room afterward instead of your whole house.
What good containment looks like
The equipment is half the answer. The rest costs almost nothing and gets skipped constantly.
- Sealed plastic barriers at every opening into the work area
- HVAC supply vents and returns taped off
- Walk off matting at containment exits
- Air filtration inside the containment on larger jobs
- Cleanup at the end of every day rather than at the end of the job
