# Resilient Channel Installation

Resilient channel is a thin metal profile installed between framing and drywall to decouple the two. Because sound travels through a wall structurally from board to stud to board, breaking that path is typically the single most effective soundproofing measure available.

Decoupling is the highest leverage thing you can do to a wall acoustically, and resilient channel is the most common way to achieve it. The board fastens to the channel, the channel fastens to the studs, and the flexible profile between them interrupts the direct structural path sound would otherwise travel.

It is also easy to install in a way that destroys the benefit entirely. A single screw that goes through the board, past the channel, and into the stud behind it creates a rigid bridge and short circuits the whole system. Fastener length and placement are not details here, they are the entire mechanism. Isolation clips with hat channel achieve the same goal and are more tolerant of installation error, which is why we often prefer them where the acoustic target is serious.

## Why this matters

- Interrupts the structural path sound travels through a wall
- Typically the single largest improvement available
- Fastener discipline that preserves the decoupling
- Isolation clip alternative where the target justifies it

## Our Process

1. **Scope Walkthrough**: We walk the project, measure, review existing conditions, and confirm finish levels and textures room by room.
2. **Written Estimate**: A written scope with explicit inclusions and exclusions, finish level by area, materials, and a realistic schedule.
3. **Protection and Mobilization**: Floors, fixtures, and access routes protected, containment installed, and materials staged before work starts.
4. **Execute in Sequence**: Framing, board, finishing, and texture completed in sequence with quality checked at each stage rather than only at the end.
5. **Punch and Walkthrough**: Raking light inspection, punch list completion, full cleanup, and a walkthrough before the work is signed off.

## What's Included

- Acoustic target review and system selection
- Channel or clip layout and installation
- Board installation with correct fastener length and placement
- Perimeter isolation and acoustic sealing
- Coordination with cavity insulation

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why is resilient channel so easy to get wrong?

Because a single overlong screw that reaches the stud behind the channel creates a rigid bridge and short circuits the decoupling at that point. The board must fasten to the channel only. Fastener length and placement are the entire mechanism, not a detail, which is why we specify them explicitly and check them.

### Resilient channel or isolation clips?

Clips with hat channel generally perform better and are considerably more forgiving of installation error, at higher material cost. Resilient channel is less expensive and works well when installed correctly. Where the acoustic target genuinely matters, we usually recommend clips.
