# Acoustic Drywall Assemblies

An acoustic drywall assembly is a complete wall or ceiling system engineered to a sound transmission target. It combines decoupled framing, cavity absorption, added mass, and comprehensive sealing, because acoustic performance is determined by the weakest element in the system.

An acoustic assembly is engineered backwards from a target. You decide what level of isolation you need, then design the assembly that delivers it, rather than picking components and hoping.

The critical concept is the weakest link. Acoustic performance is not an average of the components; it is dominated by whatever path is easiest for sound. A wall with an excellent rated assembly and a single unsealed penetration performs like a wall with a hole in it, because acoustically it has one.

This is why our acoustic scopes explicitly cover the boring parts: sealant at the top and bottom plates, putty pads on electrical boxes, offsetting boxes so they are not back to back, and sealing around every pipe and conduit. Those details cost very little and they are the difference between the assembly performing and not.

## Why this matters

- Designed backwards from an actual isolation target
- Weakest link analysis rather than component selection
- Flanking paths identified, including doors, floors, and ceilings
- Every penetration and perimeter detailed in the scope

## Our Process

1. **Define the Performance Target**: Moisture, fire, sound, and impact are four different problems. We establish which one you are actually solving before specifying anything.
2. **Specify the Assembly**: Performance comes from the complete assembly, not the board alone. We specify board, framing, insulation, fasteners, and sealing together.
3. **Written Scope**: The estimate names the specific board type and assembly details, so what you are buying is unambiguous.
4. **Build to the Detail**: Specialty assemblies only perform when built exactly as listed. We follow the detail rather than approximating it.
5. **Verify and Document**: Assembly checked before close in, documented where an inspection or rating depends on it, then finished and cleaned.

## What's Included

- Target definition and assembly design
- Decoupled framing or resilient mounting
- Cavity insulation to specification
- Single or double layer board as designed
- Acoustic sealant at all perimeters and penetrations
- Electrical box treatment and offsetting
- Flanking path review

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What does STC mean?

Sound Transmission Class is a single number rating of how well an assembly reduces airborne sound. Higher is better. As rough guidance, a standard uninsulated partition sits around the low 30s, where normal conversation is intelligible through the wall. The mid 40s makes loud speech faint. The 50s and above is where you stop noticing normal activity next door. Real world results depend heavily on installation quality and on flanking paths.

### Why did my soundproofing not work as well as expected?

Almost always flanking or sealing. Sound found a path that bypassed the wall: under the door, through a shared ceiling cavity, through back to back electrical boxes, or through an unsealed perimeter. The assembly itself may be performing exactly as designed while a single bypass dominates what you actually hear.
