# Paint Prep in Irvine and Orange County

Paint preparation brings a drywall surface to a state where primer will bond and absorb evenly. That means the specified finish level is achieved, there are no ridges or gouges, and all sanding dust has been removed from the surface.

Paint prep is where two trades meet, and it is where responsibility most often gets fumbled. The drywall contractor says the wall is ready. The painter says it is not. The client is caught between them, usually after the schedule has already slipped.

We remove the ambiguity by working to a defined standard and verifying it before handoff. The surface meets its specified finish level. There are no ridges at joints or bead lines. There are no gouges or torn paper from oversanding. And there is no dust, which is the item most often skipped and the one that causes paint adhesion to fail months later.

We check all of it under raking light, because raking light finds what room light hides, and we would much rather find a problem ourselves than have your painter find it with a sprayer already loaded.

Paint prep does not mean priming. Priming is normally the painter s first coat and it is also the moment any remaining defect becomes visible, which is precisely why the surface has to be right beforehand.

## Paint Prep services

- **[Final Surface Preparation](https://hanenburg-drywall.vercel.app/services/paint-prep/final-surface-preparation)**: The last inspection and correction pass before painting begins.
- **[Primer Ready Surfaces](https://hanenburg-drywall.vercel.app/services/paint-prep/primer-ready-surfaces)**: Uniform, clean, correctly finished, so primer bonds and absorbs evenly.

## Why this matters

- A defined standard rather than a vague claim of ready
- Verified under raking light before handoff
- Dust genuinely removed so primer bonds to the wall
- Direct coordination with your painter so expectations match
- Problems found by us rather than by your painter

## Our Process

1. **Assess and Scope**: We walk the space, assess existing conditions, and confirm exactly what the paint preparation work needs to achieve.
2. **Written Estimate**: A clear written scope covering inclusions, exclusions, materials, finish level, and a realistic schedule.
3. **Protect and Contain**: Floors, furnishings, and adjacent areas protected, with containment installed before any dust producing work.
4. **Execute**: The paint preparation work carried out with quality checked at each stage rather than only at the end.
5. **Clean and Walk Through**: Full cleanup and debris removal, then a walkthrough with you before we consider the work complete.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What does paint ready actually mean?

The surface is at its specified finish level, sanded uniform with no ridges at joints or beads, free of gouges and torn paper, and completely free of dust so primer will bond and absorb evenly. It does not mean primed. If a contractor cannot tell you which finish level they delivered, they have not defined ready.

### Why does dust removal matter so much?

Because primer applied over dust bonds to the dust rather than to the wall. The paint film looks fine initially and fails later, often as peeling or poor adhesion in patches. It is one of the most common causes of paint failure on new drywall and it is entirely preventable.

### Do you prime the walls?

No, priming is part of the painting scope. We deliver a verified paint ready surface and we are happy to walk it with your painter so both trades agree on the condition before painting starts.
