# Thermal Insulation Installation

Thermal insulation reduces heat transfer through walls, ceilings, and floors. In Orange County s climate the priority is usually keeping heat out in summer, which makes attic and ceiling insulation the highest impact place to invest.

In Orange County the thermal problem is mostly cooling rather than heating. Heat gain through the roof and attic dominates summer cooling load, which makes attic insulation the single highest return place to spend money on thermal performance in most homes here.

Air sealing matters at least as much as R value and gets far less attention. An attic with excellent insulation and unsealed penetrations around can lights, plumbing stacks, and the attic hatch is losing conditioned air through those paths continuously. Sealing them costs very little and often produces a bigger comfort improvement than adding insulation depth.

## Why this matters

- Attic and ceiling prioritised, where the return is highest in this climate
- Air sealing done before insulating, not skipped
- Full cavity contact with no compression
- R values specified for the assembly rather than by habit

## Our Process

1. **Assess the Assembly**: We look at cavity depth, framing spacing, the space above or behind, and what the assembly needs to achieve thermally or acoustically.
2. **Written Scope**: Estimate stating insulation type, R value or acoustic target, coverage area, and how it coordinates with the drywall schedule.
3. **Protect and Prepare**: Area protected and any existing material removed. Insulation work generates airborne fibre, so containment matters.
4. **Install to Full Contact**: Material installed to fill the cavity completely without compression or gaps, because both destroy performance.
5. **Inspect Before Close In**: We inspect coverage before board goes up, because once the wall is closed nobody will ever see it again.

## What's Included

- Assembly assessment and R value specification
- Air sealing at penetrations
- Insulation installation to full contact
- Attic hatch and access insulation
- Baffles at eaves to maintain ventilation
- Coverage verification

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Where should I insulate first in an Orange County home?

The attic, almost always. Roof and attic heat gain dominates summer cooling load here, and attic work is the least disruptive and least expensive place to add insulation because access does not require opening walls. Air sealing the attic penetrations at the same time compounds the benefit.

### Is more R value always better?

It has diminishing returns. Going from very little insulation to a code appropriate level produces a large improvement. Going well beyond that produces progressively smaller gains for the same cost. Money is usually better spent on air sealing and on fixing gaps than on adding depth beyond the point of diminishing returns.
