# Containment and HEPA Sanding

Containment and HEPA sanding are two complementary controls. Containment barriers physically isolate the work area, while HEPA vacuum extraction captures dust at the sanding head. Used together they prevent the large majority of dust migration.

These two controls do different jobs and they are most effective together. Containment stops dust leaving the work area. HEPA extraction stops it becoming airborne in the first place. Either alone helps; both together is what makes an occupied space genuinely liveable during the work.

On larger or more sensitive jobs we add air filtration inside the containment, which pulls air through a HEPA filter and can maintain slight negative pressure so any air movement is inward rather than outward. That is the same principle used in remediation work, applied at a proportionate scale.

## Why this matters

- Sealed barriers at every opening into the work area
- Source capture at the sanding head
- Air filtration and negative pressure on sensitive jobs
- HVAC returns sealed so dust does not enter the system

## Our Process

1. **Assess and Scope**: We walk the space, assess existing conditions, and confirm exactly what the containment and HEPA sanding work needs to achieve.
2. **Written Estimate**: A clear written scope covering inclusions, exclusions, materials, finish level, and a realistic schedule.
3. **Protect and Contain**: Floors, furnishings, and adjacent areas protected, with containment installed before any dust producing work.
4. **Execute**: The containment and HEPA sanding work carried out with quality checked at each stage rather than only at the end.
5. **Clean and Walk Through**: Full cleanup and debris removal, then a walkthrough with you before we consider the work complete.

## What's Included

- Containment barrier installation with sealed doorways
- HVAC vent and return sealing in the work area
- Floor protection and walk off matting
- HEPA vacuum assisted sanding
- Air filtration where specified
- Controlled breakdown of containment at completion

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why do you seal the HVAC vents?

Because an open return in the work area will pull fine gypsum dust straight into your ductwork and then distribute it through the entire building every time the system runs. Sealing the vents and returns in the work area is one of the highest value five minute tasks on any drywall job.
