# Smooth Wall Finish

A smooth wall finish has no applied texture at all. Because there is nothing to disguise surface variation, it requires a Level 5 finish underneath, meaning a full skim coat over the entire surface followed by fine sanding.

Smooth walls have become the default in contemporary Orange County interiors, and they are unforgiving in a way textured walls are not. With no pattern to break up reflected light, the wall is judged purely on its plane. Every joint, every fastener, and every slight dip is visible if the underlying finish is not right.

This is why a smooth wall is not a texture decision, it is a finish level decision. Smooth walls require Level 5: a full skim coat across the entire surface so that compound and board paper absorb paint identically. Specifying smooth walls over a Level 4 base is the most reliable way to end up with visible joint banding after painting.

## Why this matters

- Clean contemporary appearance with no pattern
- Level 5 base so joints do not band under paint
- Handles higher paint sheens that textured walls make awkward
- Full surface inspected under raking light before handoff

## Our Process

1. **Identify the Existing Texture**: We examine the surrounding surface closely to identify the texture type, the grain size, and how heavily it was applied.
2. **Sample and Approve**: We spray a sample board, adjust mud consistency, pressure, and timing until it matches, and show it to you before committing.
3. **Protect and Mask**: Texture spray travels. Floors, trim, fixtures, and adjacent surfaces are fully masked before any material is sprayed.
4. **Apply and Work**: Texture is applied to the approved sample specification and worked at the correct moment, which is what determines the final profile.
5. **Inspect and Clean**: Once dry we check the match under the room lighting, correct anything that reads differently, and clean the space fully.

## What's Included

- Level 4 joint work completed and sanded
- Full surface skim coat
- Fine sanding to a uniform plane
- Raking light inspection from multiple angles
- Dust controlled cleanup

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can I just leave my walls untextured without a Level 5 finish?

You can, and it is a common and expensive mistake. Without the skim coat, joint compound and the board paper absorb paint differently, so every taped joint reads as a subtly different band once painted. Texture normally hides that. With no texture, nothing does.

### Can existing textured walls be made smooth?

Yes. The texture is knocked down or skimmed over and the surface is built up and finished to Level 5. It is a skim coating job and it is genuinely more work than most people expect, but it is the correct route to a smooth wall in an existing home.
