# Skip Trowel Texture

Skip trowel is a hand applied texture created by dragging a trowel loaded with thinned compound across the surface so it skips, leaving irregular flattened areas with bare surface between. It produces a subtler, more handcrafted look than sprayed textures.

Skip trowel is applied entirely by hand. Thinned compound is loaded onto a curved trowel and dragged at a low angle so the blade skips across the surface, depositing material in irregular patches with untouched surface between them. The result is softer and less uniform than any sprayed texture.

Because it is hand applied, it is also the hardest texture to match on a repair. Every applicator has a slightly different hand: pressure, angle, direction, and patch size all vary. Matching someone else s skip trowel closely enough to be invisible is genuinely difficult, and on a repair we will often recommend retexturing the full wall corner to corner instead.

## Our Process

1. **Identify the Existing Texture**: We examine the surrounding surface closely to identify the texture type, the grain size, and how heavily it was applied.
2. **Sample and Approve**: We spray a sample board, adjust mud consistency, pressure, and timing until it matches, and show it to you before committing.
3. **Protect and Mask**: Texture spray travels. Floors, trim, fixtures, and adjacent surfaces are fully masked before any material is sprayed.
4. **Apply and Work**: Texture is applied to the approved sample specification and worked at the correct moment, which is what determines the final profile.
5. **Inspect and Clean**: Once dry we check the match under the room lighting, correct anything that reads differently, and clean the space fully.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can skip trowel be patched invisibly?

Sometimes, but it is the least forgiving texture to match because it is entirely hand applied and every applicator has a different hand. Where the patch is in a visible location, retexturing the full wall from corner to corner usually gives a far better result than a patch that will always be slightly detectable.
