# Water Damage Drywall Repair

Water damage drywall repair removes gypsum board that has absorbed moisture, confirms the cavity behind it is dry, and installs new board. Water damaged board cannot be dried and reused, because the gypsum core loses structural integrity and the paper face becomes a growth surface.

Water damaged drywall cannot be saved. This is the single most common misconception we correct. Gypsum board that has taken on water loses its core strength permanently, and the paper facing on both sides becomes an ideal surface for mold. Drying it out does not restore it, and painting over the stain hides the problem for a few months at most.

The correct sequence is to stop the source, remove the affected board back to dry material, verify the cavity and framing are actually dry rather than assuming, address the insulation if it was wetted, and then install new board. Where the area is prone to moisture, this is the moment to upgrade to moisture resistant board rather than putting standard board back.

We do not do water extraction or mold remediation. Where the damage is beyond a straightforward board replacement, we will say so and tell you what needs to happen first.

## Why this matters

- Compromised board removed rather than dried and reused
- Cavity and framing checked for moisture before closing in
- Wet insulation identified and flagged
- Moisture resistant board specified where the location warrants it
- Honest handoff when remediation is needed first

## Our Process

1. **Assess the Extent**: We map how far the moisture travelled, which is usually further than the visible stain.
2. **Confirm the Source is Fixed**: New board goes over a leak that is still active only if you want to do this twice. The source has to be resolved first.
3. **Remove and Dry**: Affected board removed back to dry material and the cavity verified dry before anything is closed in.
4. **Replace**: New board installed, specified for moisture resistance where the location calls for it.
5. **Finish and Match**: Joints treated, texture matched, area cleaned and walked.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can water damaged drywall just be dried out and painted?

No. The gypsum core loses strength permanently once it has absorbed water, and the paper facing on both sides is an ideal mold substrate. Drying does not reverse either. The stain may hide under stain blocking primer for a while, but the board itself is compromised and needs to come out.

### How far past the stain do you have to remove?

Moisture wicks well beyond what is visible. We cut back to material that is genuinely dry and sound, which is usually further than the stain suggests. Cutting exactly to the stain line is how this repair ends up being done twice.

### Do you handle mold remediation?

No. We are a drywall contractor, not a remediation firm. If we find growth beyond a small surface area we will stop, tell you, and recommend you bring in a licensed remediation contractor before we install new board. Closing a wall over an unresolved mold problem helps nobody.

### Will insurance cover this?

That is between you and your carrier and depends on the cause. We can provide a written scope and photographs documenting the damage and the work, which is typically what adjusters ask for.
