# Large Area Drywall Repair

Large area drywall repair replaces one or more full sheets rather than patching. Once damage covers a significant portion of a sheet, replacing the whole sheet produces fewer joints, a flatter plane, and a better result than a large patch.

There is a point where patching stops being the efficient answer. A patch introduces a joint around its entire perimeter, and every joint is a place that can telegraph. Once the damaged area approaches half a sheet, replacing the whole sheet gives you two clean joints at the framing instead of four joints floating in the field.

Large area repairs also let us reset the plane. If the original surface was wavy or the framing has moved, a full sheet replacement is the opportunity to correct it rather than reproduce it.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### When is replacing better than patching?

Roughly once damage exceeds about a third of a sheet, when there are several holes close together, or when the existing plane is poor. Replacement is often the same cost or less than a large patch once you account for the finishing labor a big patch actually requires.
