# Drywall Crack Repair

Drywall crack repair requires cutting out the crack, reinforcing the joint with tape, and rebuilding the surface in coats. Simply filling a crack with compound does not work, because the movement that opened it will open it again along exactly the same line.

A crack in drywall is movement made visible. Something in the assembly moved: the framing shrank as it dried, the house settled, a temperature or humidity swing expanded and contracted the materials, or a joint was never properly reinforced in the first place.

Filling that crack with compound puts a rigid material across a moving joint. It will crack again, usually within a season, along the same line. The correct repair is to open the crack, install tape across it so the joint has tensile reinforcement, and rebuild the surface in thin coats. Where movement is significant and ongoing, the right answer may be a control joint that lets the assembly move without cracking.

## Why this matters

- Cracks cut out and taped, not surface filled
- Cause assessed so the correct method is used
- Control joints recommended where movement is ongoing
- Texture matched across the repaired band

## Our Process

1. **Diagnose the Movement**: We look at where the crack runs and what it connects to in order to identify the cause.
2. **Written Scope**: Method, extent, and whether a control joint is recommended.
3. **Protect**: Area protected and contained before cutting.
4. **Cut and Reinforce**: Crack opened along its length and tape embedded so the joint has real reinforcement.
5. **Rebuild and Match**: Compound built in thin coats, feathered wide, then textured to match and sanded clean.

## What's Included

- Crack assessment and cause diagnosis
- Cut out along the crack line
- Tape reinforcement across the joint
- Multi coat compound build with dry time
- Wide feathering so the repair band disappears
- Texture matching and dust controlled sanding

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why do my drywall cracks keep coming back?

Because they were filled rather than reinforced. Compound has almost no tensile strength. Without tape bridging the joint, the next seasonal movement reopens the same line. Cutting the crack out and taping it is what actually holds.

### Are cracks in my walls a structural problem?

Usually not. Most are normal seasonal movement, framing shrinkage, or settling, especially at corners of doors and windows where stress concentrates. Cracks that are wide, growing quickly, running diagonally across multiple surfaces, or accompanied by doors that no longer close are worth having a structural engineer look at. We will tell you if what we see looks like more than a finish issue.

### What is a control joint?

A deliberate break in the drywall surface that allows the assembly to expand and contract without cracking the finish. On long wall runs, large ceilings, and where framing types change, a control joint prevents cracks rather than repairing them repeatedly.
