# Remodel Drywall Installation

Remodel drywall installation ties new board into existing walls and ceilings. The technical challenge is the transition: the new surface has to meet the old one in plane, and the texture has to match well enough that the joint disappears once paint is on.

Remodel drywall is harder than new construction, and it is priced and scheduled by many contractors as though it were easier. The difficulty is not the new board. It is everything the new board has to meet.

Existing walls are rarely plumb, rarely flat, and never the same thickness you expect. A 1960s Orange County house may have three quarter inch plaster in one room and half inch board in the next. Where new meets old, that difference has to be feathered out over enough distance that the eye does not catch it.

Then there is the texture. Matching an existing orange peel or knockdown means matching the spray pressure, the mud consistency, the nozzle, and the knockdown timing. We sample it, show you, and adjust before committing.

## Why this matters

- Transitions feathered so new and old read as one surface
- Existing wall thickness measured rather than assumed
- Texture sampled and matched before full application
- Containment so the rest of the house stays clean
- Coordination with electrical, plumbing, and framing changes

## Our Process

1. **Assess Existing Conditions**: We measure existing wall thickness, check plane, and identify the texture type before quoting.
2. **Written Scope**: Clear scope covering removal, framing changes, new board, transitions, and texture matching.
3. **Protect and Remove**: Containment goes up, then existing material is removed selectively to limit the repair footprint.
4. **Install and Transition**: New board is set to match the existing plane, and transitions are feathered out over a wide enough area to disappear.
5. **Match and Finish**: Texture sampled, approved, and applied, then the area is cleaned and walked with you.

## What's Included

- Selective removal of existing drywall where required
- Framing modification and blocking as needed
- New board installed to match existing plane and thickness
- Feathered transitions at new to old joints
- Texture sampling and matching
- Containment and daily cleanup
- Paint ready finish

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can you match my existing wall texture?

In the large majority of cases yes. We identify the texture type, replicate it on a sample board, and adjust until it matches. Where an exact match is not achievable, usually with unusual hand applied textures, we tell you before starting and discuss retexturing the full wall instead of chasing a match that will always show.

### My old walls are plaster, not drywall. Can you still work on them?

Yes. Older Orange County homes often have plaster over lath. We can patch plaster, skim over it, or transition to new drywall while keeping the surfaces flush.

### Will the seam between new and old show?

Not if the transition is done properly. The joint gets feathered over a wide area rather than built up in a narrow band, which is the usual cause of a visible ridge. Texture matching finishes the job.
