# Ceiling Drywall Installation

Ceiling drywall installation uses heavier 5/8 inch board fastened at tighter spacing than walls, because gravity works against a ceiling continuously. Correct board selection, framing spacing, and fastening are what keep a ceiling flat and free of sag over time.

A ceiling is the least forgiving surface in a building. It is lit from the side by every window and every fixture, which means any dip, ridge, or joint shows in a way the same defect never would on a wall. And unlike a wall, it is fighting gravity every day of its life.

That is why ceilings get 5/8 inch board rather than half inch, why fastener spacing is tighter, and why framing spacing matters more. A ceiling hung with the wrong board on 24 inch centers will sag between joists, and no amount of finishing skill fixes that after the fact.

Finishing a ceiling also takes longer than finishing a wall of the same size. Joints have to be feathered wider because the raking light from windows will find anything that is not.

## Why this matters

- Correct board weight and thickness for the framing spacing
- Fastening pattern that resists sag and fastener pops
- Joints feathered wide to survive raking light
- Texture or smooth finish applied to match the room
- Works for flat, vaulted, tray, and coffered ceilings

## Our Process

1. **Assess the Framing**: We check joist spacing, plane, and condition to determine board thickness and whether furring is needed.
2. **Scope and Schedule**: Written scope covering board type, finish level, texture, and the work schedule.
3. **Protect the Room**: Full floor and furniture protection, since ceiling work drops debris everywhere.
4. **Hang and Fasten**: Board hung with correct fastener type, spacing, and depth so the ceiling holds its plane.
5. **Finish and Inspect**: Joints feathered wide, sanded, textured to match, then inspected under raking light from every window.

## What's Included

- Framing and joist spacing check
- Furring or strapping where spacing requires it
- Board installation with correct fastening
- Joint treatment with wide feathering
- Sanding to specified finish level
- Texture application or smooth finish
- Raking light inspection

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why do ceilings use thicker drywall than walls?

Gravity. A ceiling carries its own weight continuously, so 5/8 inch board is used to resist sag between framing members. Half inch board on 24 inch centers will visibly dip over time, and sag cannot be corrected without taking the ceiling down.

### Why do ceiling defects show more than wall defects?

Raking light. Daylight from a window travels almost parallel to a ceiling surface, which casts a shadow off any ridge or dip. The same imperfection on a wall lit straight on would be invisible. This is why ceiling joints get feathered wider and inspected more carefully.

### Can you install drywall on a vaulted or high ceiling?

Yes. Vaulted, cathedral, and high ceilings need staging or lifts and take longer, but they are standard work for us. The main differences are access, sheet handling, and the extra care joints need at height.
