# Blocking and Backing Installation

Blocking and backing is extra framing installed between studs to provide solid fastening points behind finished drywall. It supports wall mounted televisions, cabinets, grab bars, handrails, and equipment, and it has to be installed before board goes up.

Blocking is the cheapest insurance in construction and the most commonly skipped step. It costs a few dollars and a few minutes per location during framing. Adding it after the wall is finished means cutting the wall open, installing it, patching, and texture matching, which is easily fifty times the cost.

The conversation to have before a wall closes is simple: what is going on this wall, ever? Televisions, floating shelves, upper cabinets, handrails, grab bars, headboards, and equipment brackets all need it. In accessible and aging in place work, grab bar blocking should go in around every toilet and in every shower whether or not a bar is being installed today.

## Why this matters

- Solid fastening for heavy items with no special anchors needed
- Costs almost nothing now versus opening a finished wall later
- Essential in metal framed walls where studs hold very little
- Future proofs accessible bathrooms for grab bars

## Our Process

1. **Assess and Measure**: We review the space, take measurements, and confirm exactly what the blocking and backing scope needs to achieve.
2. **Written Scope**: You receive a written estimate with clear inclusions, exclusions, materials, and a realistic schedule.
3. **Protect and Prepare**: Floors, fixtures, and adjacent finished areas are protected before work begins.
4. **Execute the Work**: The blocking and backing work is completed to spec, with quality checked at each stage rather than only at the end.
5. **Clean and Walk Through**: Full cleanup, then a walkthrough with you before we consider the work complete.

## What's Included

- Walkthrough to identify every planned and likely mount location
- Blocking sized and positioned for the specific load
- Installation between studs at correct heights
- Documentation of blocking locations for future reference

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What should I put blocking in for?

Wall mounted televisions, upper cabinets, floating shelves, handrails, grab bars, towel bars in commercial restrooms, headboards, heavy mirrors, and any equipment brackets. In bathrooms we recommend grab bar blocking as standard even when no bar is going in now, because it costs almost nothing and makes a future accessibility retrofit trivial.

### Can blocking be added after the drywall is up?

Only by opening the wall. That means cutting, installing, patching, and texture matching, which is dramatically more expensive than doing it during framing. It is worth spending ten minutes thinking about mounts before a wall closes.
