# Drywall Sanding and Surface Preparation

Drywall sanding smooths the dried compound to a uniform surface without gouging the board paper. Surface preparation then removes all residual dust, because primer applied over dust will not bond properly and the paint film will fail.

Sanding is where a good finishing job can be undone. Sand too aggressively and you cut through the compound into the paper face, which raises fibres that show through paint as a fuzzy patch. Sand too little and ridges remain that catch light along every joint.

The second half is dust removal, which is skipped more often than it is done. Fine gypsum dust settles on every horizontal surface and clings to the wall itself. Primer applied over that dust bonds to the dust rather than to the wall, and the paint film fails later. We remove dust properly before calling a surface prepped, and we use HEPA extraction during sanding so there is far less of it to remove.

## Why this matters

- Sanded to uniform without cutting through to the paper face
- HEPA extraction during sanding, so far less dust escapes
- Full dust removal before the surface is called ready
- Raking light check to catch ridges before the painter does

## Our Process

1. **Assess the Surface**: We review the substrate, the lighting the wall actually lives in, and the paint sheen planned, because all three drive the finish level required.
2. **Written Scope**: The estimate states the finish level explicitly, so there is no ambiguity between us, you, and your painter.
3. **Protect and Contain**: Floors and adjacent areas protected, containment set before any sanding begins.
4. **Build the Coats**: Compound applied in thin passes with full dry time between coats. Rushing this stage is what causes shrinkage and cracking.
5. **Inspect Under Raking Light**: The surface is inspected with a light held near parallel to it, which reveals what normal room light hides. Anything found is corrected before we finish.

## What's Included

- Progressive grit sanding appropriate to the coat
- HEPA vacuum extraction at the sanding head
- Edge and corner detail sanding

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How do you keep drywall dust out of the rest of the house?

Containment barriers at every opening into the work area, plastic over doorways, and sanding tools with HEPA vacuum extraction attached at the head so dust is captured as it is created rather than after it has settled. That combination removes the large majority of what would otherwise end up throughout the house.

### Why does my wall look fuzzy after sanding?

The paper face of the board was sanded through, raising the fibres. It happens when sanding is too aggressive or the compound was applied too thin over the joint. The fix is to skim the affected area and resand more carefully, not to paint over it, because paint will make the fuzz more visible rather than less.
