# Coffered Ceiling Drywall

A coffered ceiling uses a grid of recessed panels separated by projecting beams. Because the pattern repeats, any inconsistency in beam width, panel size, or corner alignment is immediately obvious by comparison with the panels next to it.

Coffered ceilings are the most demanding ceiling type because the pattern is self checking. Every panel sits next to another panel, and every beam sits next to another beam. If one is a quarter inch wider than its neighbour, you see it immediately without needing to measure anything.

So the work is essentially precision layout. The grid gets set out carefully before any framing goes up, adjusted so panel sizes are consistent and the pattern centres properly in the room, and then built to that layout without drift. There are also a great many inside and outside corners, each of which needs bead and proper finishing.

2. **Written Scope**: Clear estimate covering board type, finish level, texture, protection, and a realistic schedule.
3. **Protect the Room**: Ceiling work drops debris across the entire room, so floors, furniture, and fixtures are fully covered before we start.
4. **Install and Finish**: Board hung with correct fastening, joints treated and feathered wide, then textured or finished smooth as specified.
5. **Verify Under Raking Light**: We check the finished ceiling from the direction of every window, because that is where the raking light comes from.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How much ceiling height does a coffered ceiling need?

The beams project down, so you lose their depth from the lowest point. Nine foot ceilings and above handle it comfortably. It can be done at eight feet with shallow beams, but the room can feel lower rather than more detailed, and we will say so if that is the situation.
