A sag is either fastener failure or board that was too thin for the span. Repairing the surface without addressing any of those means doing it again. Water is the one to be most careful with. A stain on a ceiling means water travelled somewhere above it, and the affected board is compromised whether or not it looks it. Is that serious? Usually not structurally. That specific crack is very often truss uplift, where roof trusses move seasonally with humidity changes and lift slightly at the centre, opening a gap at the wall line. It is cosmetic and it tends to reopen with the seasons if it is simply filled. The durable fix is a proper reinforced repair, and in some cases a crown moulding detail that allows the movement without showing. ### Can you repair a water stained ceiling without replacing the board? Only if the board is genuinely sound, which we check rather than assume. If the gypsum core absorbed water it has lost strength permanently and needs replacing.
