# What to Expect on Installation Day

> **TLDR**: Day one is protection, staging, and **hanging board**. Finishing happens over the following days because each compound coat needs to **dry fully** before the next.

A drywall installation day begins with protection and containment, followed by material staging, then board hanging and fastening. Finishing follows over subsequent days as each compound coat is allowed to dry fully before the next.

## What happens first?

Protection and containment, before anything else. Floors get covered, remaining furniture gets protected, doorways get sealed, and HVAC vents and returns in the work area get taped off.

This takes longer than people expect and it is not wasted time. It is the difference between dust in one room and dust throughout the building.

## What happens during hanging?

Material gets staged into the room, then board is measured, cut, and fastened. This is the loud stage: cutting, screwing, and lifting.

Sheet layout is planned rather than improvised, because minimising butt joints reduces the number of places the wall can telegraph later.

## What happens over the following days?

Corner bead goes on, then joint treatment begins. Tape is bedded, then two or more build coats follow, each wider than the last and each requiring full drying before the next.

Those drying gaps are why the schedule looks like activity, quiet, activity, quiet. The crew is not absent because the job is unimportant. Compound that is coated over before it has dried locks shrinkage into the wall.

## What happens at the end?

Sanding with dust extraction, then texture application or smooth finishing, then a raking light inspection where we hold a light almost flat against the surface to reveal anything room light hides.

Anything found gets corrected. Then full cleanup, debris removal, and a walkthrough with you before we consider the work complete.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Which days will be loudest and dustiest?

Hanging day is the loudest, with cutting and fastening. Sanding day is the dustiest, though dustless sanding with HEPA extraction reduces that substantially. We will tell you which days those are so you can plan around them.
