# Drywall Project Timelines

> **TLDR**: Drying time, not labour, sets drywall schedules. Each compound coat needs **overnight** to dry. A room repair is **2 to 4 days**; a whole house is **1 to 3 weeks**. Rushing drying causes cracks and shrinkage.

Drywall schedules are set by compound drying time rather than by labour hours. Each coat needs to dry fully before the next, typically overnight. A single room repair is usually two to four days and a whole house installation is one to three weeks.

## Why does drywall take longer than people expect?

Because most of the schedule is waiting, not working. Joint compound shrinks as it dries, and applying the next coat before the previous one has fully dried locks that shrinkage into the wall, where it later appears as a depression along the joint or as hairline cracking.

There is no technique that beats letting it dry. A contractor promising three coats in one day is either using fast setting compound throughout, which has its own tradeoffs, or is building future problems into your walls.

## How long do common drywall jobs take?

These are realistic ranges including drying time, not optimistic ones.

| Job | Typical duration | Main constraint |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Small patch, no texture match | 1 to 2 days | Compound drying |
| Patch with texture matching | 2 to 3 days | Sampling plus drying |
| Single room installation | 3 to 5 days | Three coats plus texture |
| Single room with Level 5 | 5 to 7 days | Additional skim coat and drying |
| Popcorn removal and retexture, one room | 3 to 5 days | Surface finishing after removal |
| Popcorn removal to smooth, one room | 4 to 6 days | Full skim coat |
| Whole house installation | 1 to 3 weeks | Volume plus drying cycles |
| Commercial tenant improvement | 1 to 4 weeks | Scope, inspections, trade coordination |

## What makes a schedule slip?

Most delays come from a small number of predictable causes.

- High humidity extending drying time beyond the plan
- Upstream trades running late, particularly rough in inspection
- Scope changes discovered once walls are opened
- Water damage found to extend further than the visible stain
- Texture matching needing more sampling iterations than expected

## Can the schedule be compressed?

Somewhat, and honestly. Setting type compound cures chemically rather than by evaporation, so it sets in a defined time regardless of humidity. That can genuinely compress a schedule where the scope suits it.

It is harder to sand and less forgiving to work, so it is a tool for specific situations rather than a default. Where a deadline is real, tell us at scoping and we will tell you what is genuinely achievable.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can you finish my repair in one day?

Sometimes, using setting type compound where the scope allows. For a small patch that is often realistic. For anything needing multiple build coats, or for texture matching that requires sampling and drying, a single day means skipping a step. We will tell you which situation you are in.
