# Level 4 vs Level 5 Drywall Finish

> **TLDR**: Level 4 finishes the **joints only**. Level 5 skims the **entire surface**. If your wall is smooth, strongly side lit, or getting satin or higher sheen paint, you need Level 5. Otherwise Level 4 is correct and cheaper.

Level 4 treats joints, fasteners, and beads, leaving the board paper exposed between them. Level 5 adds a full skim coat over the entire surface. The practical difference appears under raking light and under paint sheens above eggshell, where a Level 4 wall shows joint banding and a Level 5 wall does not.

## What is the difference between Level 4 and Level 5?

Level 4 applies tape and three coats of compound over the joints, the fastener heads, and the corner beads, then sands them smooth. Between those treated areas, the paper face of the drywall is left exposed.

Level 5 does all of that and then adds a thin skim coat of compound across the entire surface, so there is no exposed board paper anywhere on the wall.

| | Level 4 | Level 5 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tape embedded at joints | Yes | Yes |
| Coats over joints and beads | Three | Three |
| Fastener heads coated | Yes | Yes |
| Full surface skim coat | No | Yes |
| Board paper exposed between joints | Yes | No |
| Suits texture and flat paint | Yes | Yes |
| Suits smooth walls | No | Yes |
| Suits satin and higher sheen | No | Yes |
| Suits strong raking light | No | Yes |
| Relative cost | Baseline | Significantly higher |

## When is Level 4 the right choice?

Level 4 is the correct and cost effective specification for the large majority of residential walls in Orange County: textured surfaces receiving flat or eggshell paint under normal room lighting.

Texture provides visual forgiveness that masks the absorption difference between compound and board paper. That is precisely why textured walls do not need Level 5, and it is why the two decisions, texture and finish level, should be made together.

## When do you actually need Level 5?

Three conditions each independently push toward Level 5, and any two together make it necessary.

The wall is smooth with no texture, so there is no pattern to disguise variation. The wall receives raking light from large glazing, skylights, or wall washing fixtures, which casts shadows off any surface difference. Or the paint has a sheen above eggshell, which reflects rather than absorbs and makes absorption differences visible.

- Smooth wall design with no texture applied
- Floor to ceiling windows or glass doors on an adjacent wall
- Skylights or wall washing light fixtures
- Satin, semi gloss, or gloss paint
- Gallery, display, or feature walls
- Large open areas where the eye travels across a long plane

## How much more does Level 5 cost?

Meaningfully more, because it adds a compound coat across every square foot rather than only over joints, plus the additional drying time and the fine sanding that follows.

The most useful way to control that cost is to specify per room rather than for the whole house. A great room with a wall of glass genuinely needs Level 5. A secondary bedroom with one small window and textured walls genuinely does not. Applying one answer to the entire house either overspends or underdelivers.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### My contractor quoted Level 5 but I can see joint bands. What happened?

Almost certainly the field was not skimmed. Some contractors quote Level 5 and deliver an extra pass over the joints, which is not the same thing. Check with a raking light: if the joints read as different bands, the full surface was not skimmed. That is a legitimate basis to ask for it to be corrected.

### Can texture replace the need for Level 5?

Effectively, yes, and that is why most residential work is Level 4 with texture. Texture provides the visual forgiveness the skim coat would otherwise provide. The choice is essentially texture plus Level 4, or smooth plus Level 5. What does not work is smooth plus Level 4.
