# Dustless Drywall Sanding Explained

> **TLDR**: Dustless sanding captures dust **at the sanding head** with HEPA extraction. It is not literally dust free. Combined with **containment** and sealed HVAC vents, it means cleaning one room instead of your whole house.

Dustless drywall sanding connects the sanding head to a HEPA filtered vacuum, capturing gypsum dust as it is created rather than after it disperses. Combined with containment barriers and sealed HVAC vents, it prevents the large majority of dust migration through a building.

## Why is drywall dust such a problem?

Gypsum dust is extremely fine, which means it stays airborne far longer than most construction dust and travels through an entire building rather than settling near where it was created.

It gets into HVAC systems and is then redistributed every time the system runs. It settles into fabrics, electronics, and every horizontal surface. And it is a respiratory irritant, which matters if anyone in the household is sensitive.

It is also the number one complaint about drywall work generally, and the leading cause of low star reviews in this trade.

## How does dustless sanding work?

The sanding head has a shroud connected by hose to a HEPA filtered vacuum. As the abrasive removes compound, the vacuum draws the dust away at the point of creation, before it can become airborne.

The HEPA filtration matters specifically because gypsum dust is so fine. A standard shop vacuum will capture the coarse fraction and blow the finest particles straight back into the room, which is the fraction that travels furthest and irritates most.

## Is dustless sanding actually dust free?

No, and anyone claiming otherwise is overselling. It captures the large majority of dust at source, which is a very significant improvement, but some escapes.

The honest description is that with dustless sanding plus containment, you clean one room afterward instead of your whole house. That is a meaningful difference and it is not the same as zero.

## What else keeps dust out of the rest of the building?

The equipment is half the answer. The other half costs almost nothing and is skipped constantly.

- Containment barriers with sealed doorways at every opening into the work area
- HVAC supply vents and returns sealed in the work area, otherwise dust enters the ductwork
- Walk off matting at containment exits to catch what travels on shoes
- Air filtration inside the containment on larger or more sensitive jobs
- End of day cleanup rather than one clean at the end of the job

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Does dustless sanding cost more?

Slightly, because the equipment costs more and the process is a little slower. In an occupied home it usually saves more than it costs once you account for cleaning time, HVAC filter replacement, and the disruption of dust throughout the house.

### Why seal the HVAC vents?

Because an open return in the work area pulls fine gypsum dust straight into the ductwork, where it is then distributed through the entire building every time the system runs. Sealing vents and returns in the work area is one of the highest value five minute tasks on any drywall job.
