# How Drywall Texture Matching Actually Works

*Published 2026-07-25*

> **TLDR**: Matching requires **sampling onto a test board** and adjusting five variables until it matches. There is **no spray can** that matches your wall.

Texture matching replicates an existing wall texture by adjusting compound consistency, spray pressure, nozzle size, distance, and timing until a sample matches the wall. It requires physical sampling rather than estimation, which is why most patches are visible.

## Why most patches are visible

Because the texture does not match. Everything else about the patch can be executed correctly and the repair still announces itself from across the room.

The usual cause is treating texture as a product problem rather than a process problem. There is no aerosol can that matches your wall, because a can gives you no control over the variables that determine the result.

## The five variables

Each one changes the droplet size and pattern, and all five have to be right.

- Compound consistency, which is how far the mud is thinned
- Air pressure behind the spray
- Nozzle orifice size
- Distance from the wall
- For knockdown, the timing of the flattening pass

## The process that actually works

Spray a sample onto a test board. Hold it against the wall in the room s own lighting. Compare. Adjust. Sample again. Only when it genuinely matches does anything get sprayed on the repair.

That sequence costs about an hour and it is the entire difference between an invisible repair and a permanent reminder.

## When to retexture the whole wall instead

Hand applied textures such as skip trowel are the hardest to match, because every applicator has a different hand. Where a genuine match is not achievable, retexturing corner to corner gives a far better result than a patch that will always be slightly detectable.

A good contractor tells you that before starting rather than after.
